Combining Tailored Information Literacy Videos to Target Every Subject

Why did we build it?

In September 2014, Lauren Fralinger, Education Librarian, was approached by Dr. Mary Avalos, School of Education Professor, requesting video tutorials for her graduate students. Graduate students in this class have schedules that make it difficult for them to be on campus for a daytime class. Coincidentally, there was already a team producing library tutorials.

Together we developed a new delivery method to consolidate the video tutorials for the Education course into a simple playlist. This allows the graduate students to watch these video tutorials at their own leisure and Lauren to focus her time on other projects.

How Did We Build It?

  • Determine the topics to be covered
  • Write/edit scripts for those video tutorials
  • Create video tutorials
    • a. Record introductory video of librarian       (optional)
    • b. Record the lecture (screen recording, audio)
  • Edit video tutorials
  • Create subtitles from script
  • Publish to the web

Stats and Feedback

Of the X amount of graduate students required to watch the videos, nine completed the online survey. All responded positively to the question: After watching the Education Video Series, do you feel better prepared to perform research at the University of Miami Libraries?

Students reported feeling “much better prepared” to research online, that the videos were “easy to follow along”, and did not experiene any technical difficulties. Some students were aware of the various library research tools but appreciated the “refresher” course.

Additional feedback:

“they did a good job making me feel comfortable enough to talk to a librarian for help.”

“I thought the videos did well for introductory videos on how to use the online libraries.”

Future Plans

Education graduate students completed the tutorials as of July 15, 2015.
Dr. Avalos required students to provide feedback for assessment purposes which we will apply to future video tutorials.

Video tutorials for the School of Nursing are completed and students will start watching in August 2015 as they arrive.

We have additional video tutorials on general library topics that will be released for faculty to use in the upcoming semester. These video tutorials are voiced by additional Learning and Research Services librarians.
