About the collection
The present international studies collection at the Libraries is built upon a donation of two hundred books written by authors of Hispanic origin given to the University by students from Latin America enrolled at UM in 1936.
The University's founding vision was of an international university and the collection has expanded through steady support since1936 with accelerated growth in 1964 when the University dedicated its new Center for Advanced International Studies and again from 1983 through the early 1990s when special funds were provided annually from the University's North-South Center.
The collection supports research and study from the undergraduate to graduate levels in International Studies as well as specific area studies in Africa, the Caribbean, the European Union, Latin America and the Middle East.

This collection contains the electronic versions of 80 books previously published in hard copy as part of the Country Studies Series by the Federal Research Division. Intended for a general audience, books in the series present a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of select countries throughout the world. Most books in the series deal with a single foreign country, but a few cover several countries or a geographic region. The series includes several books on countries that no longer exist in their original configuration—such as Czechoslovakia, East Germany, the Soviet Union, Sudan, and Yugoslavia. These books remain in the series because they continue to offer valuable historical information and perspective.
