Martha Horan

Head of Preservation Strategies

Martha Horan joined the Faculty as Head of Preservation Strategies in October 2017. At the University of Miami, she is responsible for managing the Library’s preservation and conservation efforts. Preservation efforts encompass monitoring climate control for collections, developing disaster planning and response strategies, coordinating and implementing collection surveys, providing support for exhibition preparation, and participating in initiatives to preserve audiovisual and digital materials. The Library's Conservation Lab houses specialized equipment, where experienced Conservators treat a range of book and paper-based materials, with a focus on preserving the Library's Distinctive Collections. 

Previously, she worked as Preservation Librarian and Archivist at the Yale Medical Historical Library, Registrar for George Blood LP, and as Archivist for The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. In 2011, she was granted an IMLS Fellowship in Preservation Administration at The New York Public Library. She has held internships at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, The New York Public Library, the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, and in the Audio Archives at WNYC – New York Public Radio.

She holds a Master's in Information Studies (MSIS) from the University of Texas at Austin and a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Preservation Administration from the Kilgarlin Center for Preservation of the Cultural Record at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds a BA from Bates College.
