Abraham Kaleo Parrish has had over 20 years of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experience with 16 years’ work in academic libraries as a geospatial librarian. In 1994 he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art (emphasis in painting) with a minor in Geography from the University of Northern Colorado where he also worked as a student in Michener Library for three years. A dual degree Master of Arts in Geography and Master of Library and Information Science was awarded to him in 2001 from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee where he also completed a three year GIS/Map internship at the American Geographical Society Library and managed the James J. Flannery Map Collection.
Between undergrad and grad school (1994-1998), Abraham also served a four-year active service stint as an Intelligence Analyst for the U.S. Army in the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia and the 1st Armored Division at Ayers Kaserne Kirch-Göns & Friedberg, Germany with two tours in Bosnia & Hercegovina as part of the international North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Implementation and Stabilization peacekeeping Forces (IFOR/SFOR) where he managed the Brigade Map Collection, processed confiscated small arms weapons, inspected heavy weapons at cantonment sites, mapped mine fields, and tracked ethnic crime in the Multinational Division North (American led with Russian, Turkish, and Nordic/Polish Brigades) around BrĨko and Tuzla.

Prior to his arrival at the University of Miami in July of 2015, he spent 5 years as a GIS Librarian and an additional 9 years as Head of the Sterling Memorial Library Map Department at Yale University, managing both GIS and print map resources and services as well as developing a collection of cartographic and navigational scientific instruments for use in hands on teaching of the role technology played in advances in navigation and the development of cartography.
Abraham specializes in the Environmental Systems Resource Institute’s (ESRI) ArcGIS suite of GIS software, web GIS, and geodatabases, offering instructional workshops and consultation services for its utility in research and teaching. Curation of GIS data sets, support for field collection & organization of spatial data via GPS technology, and dissemination of spatial information via print or the Internet for publication or collaboration round out the array of services offered. He is also a GIS Consultant and professional cartographer with several dozen maps published primarily in the academic press and has been a member of the North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS) since 1998.
His research interests include historical land tenure, health,food & culinary geography, and cartographic & navigational scientific instruments. Born and raised in Hawaii, he also has an interest in island culture & geography, particularly its role in geopolitics.
